Case Study: Internet Security at Junee Regional Library

E-mail Print PDF

Junee Public Library in regional New South Wales has recently implemented an Endian UTM system to meet their diverse access and security needs.

The Endian Unified Threat Management appliance offers progressive, forward-looking security features at a price point that is affordable for small-medium sized businesses. It is an all-in-one appliance that provides security and Internet access combined with a stateful firewall, email security, web security, gateway antivirus and anti-spam, intrusion detection, virtual private network (VPN) and hotspot (wireless security).

Junee Library relocated to a new modern, purpose-built building, which necessitated a review of the comprehensive network setup. The challenge for library management was to provide a more secure and reliable service for staff and customers.

The endeavour for Junee library was to allow public access for users with laptops and restrict their usage time and logon hours. They needed to prevent users from accessing specific websites, which could create potential legal and ethical risks. Equally important was the need for access to a third party provider that could not only configure the solution’s key applications around the library’s requirements, but also troubleshoot IT queries via remote access on a 24/7 basis.

"Junee is over two hour’s drive from Veritech’s office, which means we would normally have to wait one or two weeks before we could have an IT specialist come to fix a problem or assist with minor queries,” Junee Shire Library Manager Kim Richards says. This was quite frustrating and, therefore, became one of the major considerations in implementing the new network setup."

After a successful Endian install at Junee Shire Council Chambers, the library decided to follow suit. The Endian Mini was installed and provides access for six public computers, two staff computers and a wireless access point for laptop users.

The Endian set up was fast and trouble free by Michael Sartor, one of Veritech’s professional IT specialists. A content filter was enabled based on the scoring system, restricting access to specific websites. A wireless hotspot was set up which is allowing users to connect using a personal laptop. This hotspot has a quick ticket feature that allows staff to quickly and easily create a one-hour ticket per user, effectively restricting usage time. Traffic prioritisation has been implemented to give staff computers higher priority when using the internet. Remote access using OpenVPN has been implemented, allowing IT support to connect over a secure channel to provide live IT support 24/7. This feature is also being used to allow other external companies temporary access to the library network in order to maintain the specialised software running on the library computers.

Junee Library is extremely pleased with how simple and effective the Endian solution has proven and could not be happier with the IT support they are receiving.

"The Endian system has effectively met all of our business needs, with the wireless hotspot proving vastly more popular than we had ever expected,” Mrs Richards says. Our staff and customers are very pleased with the new and efficient services the library provides and are certainly making the most if it. In terms of IT support, all it takes is one quick phone call to Veritech and they can solve the problem within minutes remotely. That in itself is heaven!"

Businesses interested in implementing a similar solution are encouraged to sample the Endian UTM system by using the online demonstration at www.veritechcorp.com.au and can purchase the product today through their preferred IT consultant or reseller.
