ENDIAN WIRELESS 3G KEEPS RURAL BUSINESSES ONLINE
Operating a business in remote Australia can present many IT challenges, however one regional winery has discovered a way to overcome some of these through the use of an Endian Unified Threat Management (UTM) system and its 3G wireless capabilities.
Warburn Estate Winery is located in Griffith, NSW with its sales office and additional warehouse operating from Melbourne. The winery, office and warehouse share databases and files through a VPN network that connects the Endian devices at each location. However the remote location of the winery, being far from an ADSL exchange, means that Internet services are not always reliable and outages can occur.
In an attempt to overcome the disruptions that outages were causing the business, Veritech provided a solution using 3G wireless backup links and the trunk failover feature on the Endian UTM devices. These features meant that if an outage occurred, the Endians could automatically switch on the backup 3G link, maintaining Internet connectivity.
Veritech Corporation’s Senior Network Engineer, Philip Van Veen, said the wireless 3G solution provides a good strategic solution for Warburn Estate, and covers for many of the weaknesses in internet connectivity that the business is forced to work with.
“There will always be internet outages that are out of anyone’s control, however the 3G and trunk failover solutions being used by Warburn help to lessen the impact and improve service reliability,” Philip said.
“However, the real business value is the IPSEC tunnel, which is handled by the Endians at either end, and ensures that all data travelling between the sites is encrypted and safe. With the 3G solution, the tunnel is automatically re-established when there is a link failover. Small delays are inevitable, however, without human intervention the links are re-established, and the secure tunnels are re-created over the 3G network. This all happens transparently to the user, who can then resume their work from where they left off."
"This automatic failover is especially useful during the vintage season, when the winery operates 24 hours per day, and Internet connectivity is important regardless of whether it is day or night. It's nice to know the Endian devices will manage the internet connectivity automatically without any late night call outs!" he said.
Warburn Estate's Executive Director Finance and Operations, Justin Massey said the Endian solution has been a welcome addition to our company’s security infrastructure.
“The Endian UTM, accompanied with the 3G wireless and trunk failover features has helped us to manage our inbound threats and help control our internet usage,” Massey said.
“With the 3G wireless failover in place, we have that additional level of comfort to know that our company-wide operations are secure and reliable despite problems which can crop up with our local internet connections,” he said.
